MATROX Mystique 220 Driver
Newer revisions of Mystique do not want to texture from system memory, so Direct3d compatibility with 2 MB is too low to be bothered. I did run full MATROX Mystique 220 on the slowest board, but there are no surprises.
Average framerate difference corresponds to clock difference, how about difference in Final Reality: Mystiques equipped with 4 MB were upgradable to impressive 8 MB, but I MATROX Mystique 220 more memory would make much difference for this chip. Last driver came out in September PCI interface was enriched by bus mastering.
Besides the ramdac Mystique also integrates video engine with hardware scaler. Older 3d chips of Matrox had separate unit for shading and depth interpolation, but in MATROX Mystique 220 these are now part of the DPU. In more generic terms the DPU is a bare pixel pipeline.
The big news of Mystique is texturing unit. It handles parameter interpolation, perspective MATROX Mystique 220, transparency, lookup table, lighting in true color precision, dithering and has own FIFO for addresses.

Memory controller is in charge of depth comparison. It runs fast MATROX Mystique 220 x, but I feel slowdowns in complex scenes. Lack of bilinear filtering does not hurt this game much.
But most of Direct3d games could use it, especially big low resolution textures like skies looks horrible MATROX Mystique 220. This is notorious, but Mystique has another nasty image quality degrader.
This so called stipple alpha was Matrox's choice until G, worst implementation of alpha blending imaginable. I found this just as annoying as lack of texture filtering.
Limited feature set prevents quite a few games MATROX Mystique 220 working properly or at all on the Mystique. TAW, Myth 2, Populous: Some textures in Incoming are missing like if 4 MB of chip is not enough.
This does not MATROX Mystique 220 to old chip, so I may have come to some actual difference between the revisions. There are few MATROX Mystique 220 were old with slower clocks beats fast and likely ability to texture from system memory is the reason. Newer versions, including Mystiquekept appearing until summer However, apart from higher resolutions, upgrading memory did not make much difference. Mystique was oriented on mid-end consumer and business market, offering excellent 2D performance, traditional for Matrox.

As for the 2D part, it's safe to say the videocard has no known flaws. The image is crisp, has fine colors. However, that card only could accelerate MATROX Mystique 220 very limited feature set, and was primarily targeted at CAD applications.

The Impression could not perform hardware texture mappingfor example, requiring Gouraud MATROX Mystique 220 or lower-quality techniques. Very few games took advantage of the 3D capabilities of Impression Plus, with the only known games being the three titles that were bundled with the card in MATROX Mystique 220 '3D Superpack' CD bundle: The newer Millennium card also contained 3D capabilities similar to the Impression Plus, and was nearly as limited.
Without support for texturing, the cards were very limited in visual enhancement capability. The answer to these limitations, and Matrox's first attempt at targeting the consumer gaming PC market, would be the Matrox Mystique. MATROX Mystique 220 was based heavily on the Millennium but MATROX Mystique 220 various additions and some cost-cutting measures. Mystique also had various ports on the card for memory expansion and additional hardware peripherals.
